No shaft but lots of stories

A group of panorama lifts in the office tower of the SPIEGEL publishing group in Hamburg offer unimpeded views and fast travel

Remarkable design, high-speed travel and a stylish and distinctive appearance. In the atrium of the publishing building, two shaftless elevator installations constitute the main  arteries for a group of two and three lifts respectively. Every ride affords an impressive view over the entire atrium. Thanks to the environmental compatibility of the materials used, this project was awarded the HafenCity Ecolabel in gold.

Lift cabin

Each of the lift cabins is surrounded by two concrete walls, and the system’s internal components, like guide rails and counterweights, are enclosed in a stainless steel casing. As a contrast, the passenger cabins’ panoramic glass panels are entirely transparent. The glass panels, which are anchored in the ceiling and the cabin floor, provide an unobstructed view. Even the handrail is freely suspended and only embedded in the stainless steel walls on either side.

Bolted joints

The building’s colour scheme is based on strong contrasts. Instead of concealing the technology, it is deliberately accentuated through its placement and installation. The component parts and the shaft landing doors of the panorama elevators, both of which are painted a uniform dark colour, stand out very clearly against the light ambient shades of the surrounding space. Unpainted bolted joints are intentionally mounted so as to remain visible.

Smooth ride

The sophisticated drive system technology gives passengers a smooth ride with less noise despite the speed of travel. The elevators glide with no vibrations. This is achieved by regrinding the guide rails for the elevator car and counterweights, thus avoiding any jolts or jerks during the ride. Special door drives ensure that the cabin doors open and close without making any sound. The streamlined roller gantries isolate any noises and prevent the transmission of structure-borne sound to the building.

In addition, the drives in the machine rooms were installed on vibration-isolated frames beneath the shaft so as to avoid further mechanical vibration.

Travel height

The travel height is an impressive 48 metres. At a travel speed of 2.5 m/s, passengers enjoy a fast ride from the ground to the top floor. To improve efficiency, collective control systems coordinate the travel commands entered at all elevator groups.

Lift access

At the various access points, the dark wall surrounds create a stark contrast to the stainless steel doors of the elevator. It was a deliberate decision to dispense with glass doors here so that the view across the entire atrium only reveals itself from the elevator cabin.
