Freeing rail travel from steps

As part of the barrier-free expansion of the Hamburger Hochbahn, all underground stations are currently being converted so that older people, parents with prams and passengers with disabilities also have easy and convenient access to the underground network. LUTZ Aufzüge has been working together with Hamburger Hochbahn for many years.

Also for the “Jungfernstieg” station: The underground station is located directly on Hamburg's promenade and is used by around 100,000 people every day.

In terms of technology, the requirements of the Hamburger Hochbahn were clear and demanding. First of all, a low shaft head height with high transparency had to be realised. This is part of the vandalism-proof concept utilised in elevated railway installations: A glazed shaft in combination with a cabin – also glazed – provides maximum visibility of the entire elevator. This should act as a deterrent against potential acts of vandalism, as individuals will always feel watched.

Another detail designed to prevent damage from moisture is the increased corrosion protection provided by galvanised and additionally painted components. The result is not only a visually high-quality surface, but also exceptionally resistant protection against corrosion. In this way, not even a leaking drinks bottle will pose a rust risk.

At the inauguration of the elevator in April 2021, Hamburg's Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks was also enthusiastic: “It is an outstandingly beautiful elevator, in every respect.”
